New for the 2026 Season: The Oakhurst North Torpedoes are excited to expand our community! We are now welcoming non-resident homeowners and townhome owners to join our team. We look forward to seeing new faces at the pool this summer!

Eligibility Requirements

Swimmers are divided by age group according to their age as of June 1st of the current year. Age groups at a meet are divided as follows:

8 & under 9-10 11-12 13-14 15-18

All children who can swim one length of the pool without assistance are eligible to participate. While we are a recreational swim team with swimmers of all abilities, we are nevertheless a competitive swim team, not a learn-to-swim program. If your child can swim one length of the pool without assistance, we’ll be able to make him/her a better swimmer and teach them some of the different competitive strokes.

  • For safety reasons, if your child does not know how to swim and cannot swim one length of the pool unassisted, we recommend you enroll him/her in the swimming lessons offered in our community
  • There are several swimming centers nearby where you can enroll your child(ren) for swimming lessons before the evaluation.
  • Coaches may opt to have swimmers join the Little Torpedoes swim group.

Little Torpedoes

Little Torpedoes are for children 8 years old and under who can swim halfway across the pool, either freestyle or backstroke, or even both. These swimmers can compete in home meets in EXHIBITION HEATS. They can still use kickboards or swim with a High School helper until they can finally cross the pool without any form of assistance. Once they can do it, they will advance to TORPEDOES. With the coaches' approval, they can sign up for away meets.

New Families

Families who are new to the swim team are encouraged to read our ONT HANDBOOK to better understand our summer swim team. Again, it is recommended that your child has done swimming lessons before joining the team, or can swim freestyle and backstroke. The ONT Swim Team is NOT a swim lessons program. It is a competitive swim team that competes against five (5) other Trident Conference swim teams.
